Statement
My paintings depict landscape and sky in terms of colour, atmosphere and light. While they do allude to photographic imagery, their soft minimalist qualities embrace impressionism and abstraction. The images, particularly the “Horizon” series, rely on the sparest of pictorial elements to present the essential qualities of landscape and sky. Often the details are obscured or absent, reflecting the ethereal and transitory qualities of memory.
The abstract expressionists, particularly the New York School of the mid twentieth century have had a profound influence on my work. I take a more traditional approach in my work employing linear and aerial perspective. Some of my paintings depict wild or violent atmospheric events which at times verge on the surreal. Others present the viewer with a more transcendent space where memory and emotion rise to the surface. They often suggest a sense of loss or nostalgia for an unspoiled natural world.
