While the Signal paintings are essentially abstract, they do contain elements of landscape within them. They are without a direct narrative and the paintings are meant to work as in a manner similar to that of the color field paintings of the 20th century abstract expressionists. Here, however, landscape elements appear and disappear into multi-layered veils of atmosphere. Illusions of impressionist landscape are contraposed above the more abstract spaces in the paintings thereby creating a sort of spatial contradiction. The viewer’s gaze is brought back to the surface by slashes of paint, drips and drawn marks. The sort of bounce between illusory depth and raw painted surface keeps the images fresh, active and intriguing.
